As we know and have heard over the past year or so, Phuket International Airport is currently undergoing a renovation and expansion that will see its passenger intake capabilities increase from 6.5 to 12.5 million people per year. However, there is another plan that could be in the pipeline that will hopefully see more facilities constructed at the airport.
The ‘Airport Cities’ plan is an ambitious vision to modernize many major airports across Thailand in the coming years, with Phuket International Airport part of the operation. The plan will see Phuket and five other major airports enjoy a revamp costing in the region of 31.26 million THB.
The plan is slightly different for each of the airports. However, the plans for Phuket International Airport would see the construction of more facilities such as a shopping mall, facilities for the aviation business and a sports complex.
As we are in the early stages of the plan, it is yet to be decided where the space will be found at Phuket Airport, especially with the new terminal set to be completed next year. The ‘Airport Cities’ project, if given the go-ahead, will take place in 2017.
