As we have pointed out numerous times in this blog, the expansion of Phuket International Airport is urgently needed because the airport can currently only deal with 6.5 million passengers a year. However, the airport has been bursting at the seams this year while handling a massive 9.1 million passengers.
Transport Minister, Chadchart Sittipunt, has also stressed his concerns over the speed of the construction and wants to pull out all the stops to make sure the extension is speeded up. Seeing the congestion for himself earlier this week, Mr. Chadchart is pushing to make sure the work is finished on Schedule in February next year, despite rumors that construction is already behind schedule.
The extension will allow the airport to handle 12.5 million passengers a year, and with the current growth of Phuket tourism, which is 11% on last year, the extension is urgently needed.
