If you have lived in Phuket for any amount of time over the past decade, you will know that not only the island, but also right across Thailand, is a popular setting for filming movies. To celebrate Thailand’s location as a movie setting, there are plans to open the first and only Movie Museum in Phuket.
The museum will house some memorabilia that were featured in films that were shot in Phuket and its surrounding provinces. Although it’s still in its early stages, some details have been revealed by Santi Pawai, Director of the Phuket Tourism & Sports Department, who stated “The museum will feature memorabilia from movies filmed in Phuket and neighbouring provinces such as Phang Nga and Krabi. The museum itself will be very attractive and we hope that it will help bring more visitors to the Nai Harn Beach area,”
It sounds like the museum will be constructed in the south of the island, which will be a nice boost to the local economy.
Mr Santi went on to talk about the island’s illustrious past as a film location by saying that “Most of the movies filmed in Phuket are foreign movies, with only a few being Thai. A team from Bangkok is currently gathering information on all the movies that will be exhibited at the museum.”
Phuket and its surrounding regions have been home to some very well-known films such as Tsunami: The Aftermath, The Man with the Golden Gun, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Killing Fields, Around the World in Eighty Days, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of Sith, The Beach and, most recently, Mechanic II.
