Although there has been much talk about the expansion of Phuket International Airport over the past couple of years, it seems we are at last in the final stages of completion, which is great news for the island, to alleviate the burden of extra holidaymakers we have seen in recent times.
The initial basic system checks will soon begin at the new terminal at the airport, with a soft-opening penned in for 14th February 2016, Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan recently announced.
The construction phase is now already 80% completed. There will be 10 new aircraft parking bays, alongside 4 new gangways for arrivals and departures.
“The new international terminal will be able to handle 12.5 million passengers annually, which is almost double the existing one, which can take only 6.5 million passengers per year,” said Ms Monrudee said. “But we are not only rushing the project to be done according to the plan, but also ensuring that the airport meets the standards by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. And of course the facilities at the new terminal will include brand-new duty free shops, a shopping area and restaurants.”
It sounds like those embarking and disembarking at Phuket International Airport from February onwards will finally be able to enjoy a more modern system, which will no doubt improve the conditions of visitors to the island.
