Although nobody in Thailand is benefitting from what is currently going on in Bangkok, you could say that tennis fans in Phuket are about to receive a welcome surprise. The Davis Cup tennis match between Thailand and Hong Kong, due to take place on February 14, 15, and 16, has now been moved from the capital to the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club in Thalang.
This annual tennis tournament is in the knock-out stages and is part of the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II with other teams in the group including Kuwait, Pakistan, Vietnem, Philippines and Indonesia.
“The Davis Cup is one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events. So to be entrusted with such a storied brand is a huge gift for us,” said Thanyapura Executive Chairman and four-time triathlon world champion Chris McCormack. “Thanyapura’s philosophy is ‘get more out of life’, which the elite athletes set to descend on Phuket perfectly illustrate. It is an ideal marriage.”
This is not the first time that Thanyapura has hosted world-class tennis players, as recently they hosted other top players in the run-up to the 2014 season. It’s a great scoop for Phuket whichever way you look at it.
