Phuket is a beautiful place to visit, but a few short years ago, the only issues were that the transportation systems, mainly due to taxis and tuk-tuks, which could be a little expensive. Over the past couple of years, the Phuket transport market has dropped into line, offering more value for money. One such proposed plan in the works that will take it to the next level is a monorail system, aiming to take Phuket into the next age.
Although the plans haven’t been conformed and are still in the research stage, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) has made a statement saying that studies of the project are currently being speeded up so it can help to boost the overall tourism and economy of the island.
Chaiwat Thongkhamkoon, deputy director at OTP, recently said that the study into the construction of the monorail system is now 80% complete and will be ready in full by next month. These findings will then be sent to the Transport Ministry by January for consideration.
The system is expected to cost up to and beyond 20 billion THB and will link Phuket International Airport to Chalong intersections in the Muang district. The rail is expected to span 60km in total.
It all sounds great, so let’s hope they can finish their research in steadfast time so we can all benefit from a state-of-the-art monorail system on the island.
