The south of Thailand is one of the most up and coming regions in the nation, attracting more visitors as the years go by. To take advantage of the interest in the south, a new rail route link is being proposed, connecting Trang, Satun and Phuket provinces in an effort to boost tourism in the south.
During 2012, more than 24 million people visited Thaland, with 80% of travelers visiting attractions in the Surat Thani, Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi areas, so we already know that the demand is there.
The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning are currently performing a feasibility study of the route. The rail link will travel through the main 3 provinces, all of which have stunning natural scenery and some of the best beaches in the world, making the region very desirable for European visitors especially.
The new link will cut down on travel costs for tourists to the south, while at the same time making it easier to see and visit this sub-tropical corridor.
The route is expected to be 60-km long and is planned to join the East-West rail corridor on Phang Nga.
Although the link has not yet been confirmed, we expect to see the details of the project finalized by the end of the year. It sounds like a great idea, so let’s hope their vision comes to fruition.
