If you know anything about the travel and tourism world, you will already know that to be ranked in a UNESCO list is pretty much the Holy Grail for tourist destinations and attractions. There was some great news for the island this week as Phuket has been recognized for its culinary delights and listed as a UNESCO Creative City.
Although we are usually lauded for our beaches, Phuket is now part of UNESCO for their food. The island is ranked as Thailand’s second-most important destination after Bangkok and was recently added as one of the 47 cities across 33 countries to become new members of the UNESCO Creative Cities network.
There are 7 categories in the creative section, which include Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music.
“Phuket is no longer just a beach resort. It has become a complete holiday destination with a broad range of cultural attractions and convention facilities. Being recognized by the United Nations’ most important cultural organization for its culinary creativity is an added asset,” said Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. “Phuket is already world famous for its seafood. And promotion of Thai cuisine is one of the TAT’s topmost priorities because it is an indispensable part of the travel and tourism experience.”
We have known for many years about the prowess of Thai cuisine, so it’s really nice that Phuket is being awarded for their quality and consistency for their culinary scene.
