Thailand’s six major airports had a big start to 2016 with an upward trajectory of growth that bodes well for the coming year. The combined passenger traffic across the six major airports in Thailand surged to a 14.7% increase on January last year, dealing with 10.9 million passengers, showing that the growth trend from the back end of last year has filtered into the beginning of 2016.
The highest surge in airport traffic in January was at Don Mueang, who recorded overall traffic growth of 28.6% on this time last year, totaling 2.99 million passengers. The other airports include Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Phuket International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Chiang Rai Airport and Hat Yai Airport.
International traffic alone in January rose 13.8% to 6.22 million, while domestic traffic grew 15.9% to 4.69 million.
If statistics and numbers alone can be used to gauge how the tourism industry is doing in the first quarter of 2016, then it has exceeded all expectations. Let’s hope this trend continues to move forward.
